Orlando City Soccer Tops 2012 US Open Cup Champs Sporting Kansas City 1-0 In Fourth Round Play Advancing To The Quarterfinals

It was a bit of a nail-biter at the Florida Citrus Bowl on Sunday night as USL Pro's league-leading Orlando City Soccer faced off at home against the 0-10 Antigua Barracuda.  Orlando City who posted a 7-2 victory over Antigua a month prior entered the match with an adjusted lineup including a number of first time starters.  After many failed attempts, an 87th minute penalty kick garnered City a 1-0 lead followed by a second goal in the final minute of regular play.  The 2-0 result marked the 25th regular season match that the Lions have remained undefeated at home.

Last night, the team played MLS affiliate Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas in fourth round play of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.  In a welcome change of events from the last minute play on Sunday, City took an early lead against Sporting when Forward Long Tan striked the ball to the lower corner of the goal in just the 2nd minute of play.  The Lions would hold on to their 1-0 advantage including through 5 minutes of added time which approached a generous 7 minutes of additional chances for their opponents.  The result was the team's first-ever win over Sporting KC as well as the first time in their short franchise history that they've advanced to the quarterfinals of US Open Cup play.  Sporting Kansas City won the cup in 2012.

Orlando City will face the winner of Chicago Fire vs. Columbus Crew in an away game on June 26th.  You can catch the Lions at home in an International match against Brazil's Fluminense on June 22nd and their next regular season home game against the Richmond Kickers on June 29th.

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup celebrates its centennial year and is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States.  The tournament is open to United States Soccer Federation (USSF) affiliated teams with a record 68 clubs competing this year.
